Summer Travel Season Is Ready for Takeoff at SFO

New facilities ready to welcome summer travellers, runway construction continues

SAN FRANCISCO The San Francisco International Airport (SFO) highlighted the upcoming start of the summer travel season with tips for passengers, information on parking, newly-completed facilities, and a program of live music in the terminals.

The summer travel season will begin in earnest on Friday, May 24, 2024, with approximately 147,000 forecasted passengers traveling through SFO. In total, 15.5 million travelers are expected at SFO between Memorial Day and Labor Day, which represents about 86% of pre-pandemic summer travel levels.

SFO recommends travelers allow extra time
Passengers traveling during the summer season are strongly encouraged to arrive at the airport at least 2 hours prior to departure for domestic flights and 3 hours prior to departure for international flights.

Parking garages expected to be full – book in advance
SFO expects parking garages to be at or near capacity during the summer travel season. SFO recommends that travelers take public transit or share rides to the airport.  For parking, the Airport recommends travelers book parking early using SFO’s online booking system, which allows users to choose their parking dates and times and enter payment information to complete a booking in advance.

Runway closure for construction project continues until July 1st; delays possible
The closure of Runway 28 Left for a taxiway improvement project is scheduled to be completed no later than July 1st. Airlines have already reduced flights to accommodate the closure, but SFO advises travelers that delays are still possible until the runway reopens no later than July 1st.

Final phase of Harvey Milk Terminal 1 opens June 11th; Alaska Airlines moving in
The final phase of the $2.4B Harvey Milk Terminal 1 is scheduled to open on Tuesday, June 11, 2024, featuring a new check-in area, a new mezzanine-level security checkpoint immediately accessible from the AirTrain system, two new gates, five new concessions, a new common-use lounge, a new museum gallery, and a connecting walkway linking every SFO terminal post-security.

Alaska Airlines is scheduled to move its full operation, including check-in ticket counter, gates and baggage services, from Terminal 2 into Harvey Milk Terminal 1 in late June. Alaska will be located near American Airlines and other oneworld member airlines, providing convenience for guests who have connecting domestic and international flights. Alaska’s new lobby will boast new technology that will allow guests to get through the check-in process more efficiently and give them more time to relax in Alaska’s new lounge (also opening this summer) and enjoy new amenities in Harvey Milk Terminal 1.

Terminal 3 West project begins; United to operate more flights in Terminal 2
In July, SFO will officially begin construction on the $2.5B Terminal 3 West Modernization project, which will renovate the existing 500,000 square foot western half of Terminal 3, including a seismic retrofit, an expanded security checkpoint and new passenger amenities. The project will also create 250,000 square feet of additional space, allowing for expanded food, beverage, and retail concessions. During this project, United Airlines will operate a larger number of flights in Terminal 2, and new temporary walkways will open to route passengers around the construction area.
