Vietnam Seeks To Collaborate With Chandigarh For Business & Travel Opportunities

Sums Up Brief agreements for Tie-Ups with Travel Agencies & Hotels

Embassy to appoint Consulate to Chandigarh for better Co-Operation

Embassy of the Socialist Republic of Vietnam to India is seeking increased cooperation with Industries and Travel community based out of Chandigarh & North Indian states of Punjab, Haryana, Jammu & Kashmir, Uttarakhand & Himachal Pradesh.

Both Punjab and Haryana have emerged as significant markets sharing economic & touristic potentials with Vietnam. Punjab is a key hub for textile-based industries, including yarn, readymade garments and hosiery, pharmaceutical and agricultural products, whose exports feature Vietnam among India’s top 15 trading partners as of the year 2019. Vietnam is also an ideal honeymoon destination for couples in the region and fast becoming popular as a perfect destination to celebrate dream weddings.

Ambassador of Socialist Republic of Vietnam to India, HE Mr. Pham Sanh Chau said “We aspire to forge a positive relationship between India and Vietnam across a wide number of sectors. From developing Indian business interests in Vietnam to working closely with travel agencies in North India to boost tourism, we work to create a favorable image of Vietnam by developing economic and touristic activities in the region.”

In contrast to other ASEAN economies, Vietnam has succeeded in keeping the virus under control. Vietnam has to date reported 1,300 coronavirus cases, keeping the economic impact of the outbreak to a minimum. Today (post-Corona), Vietnam is looking at becoming Southeast Asia’s single economic success with the country rising to fourth in nominal GDP in the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) this year, surpassing Singapore and Malaysia and gaining on the Philippines (IMF). Rising exports have also helped to drive growth, as companies relocate production from China.

Vietnam has surpassed its regional rivals Indonesia and Thailand and is the EU’s second most important trading partner in ASEAN. The European Union-Vietnam Free Trade Agreement (EVFTA) is the second FTA between the EU and an ASEAN country, after Singapore. Vietnam is the second country to sign trade and investment agreements in the region.

Last year, Vietnam officially began its term as president of the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) as part of its second stint as a non-permanent UNSC member for 2020-2021. Vietnam has been working in line with issues that it considers of significance and where it can also play an important role, including peacekeeping, war legacy issues, climate change, and coordination between the UN and ASEAN. This seeks to raise Vietnam’s profile, diversify its alignments, integrate the country into the wider world, and demonstrate its commitment to multilateralism and international rules and norms.

Vietnam has constantly been featured in “world’s top 10 lists” by reputable travel sites as Trip Advisor and popular media like CNN, The Guardian, Lonely Planet, etc. Phu Quoc city is called the paradise for honeymooners in Vietnam. The country is preferred and becoming popular for Indian Destination Weddings.

Since Punjab together with Haryana are major hubs of SME’s encompassing Industries that include food processing, tractors, and auto components, agro-based parts, bicycle and bicycle parts, sports goods, light engineering goods, metal and alloys, chemical products, and textiles, they become good trading partners to Vietnam. Besides, Vietnam too is open to foreign investors and business visitors who wish to do business in similar sectors -Garment & Textile products, Agricultural Products Processing and cars.

Ambassador chose Chandigarh as the first destination for a business trip since March last year, as he loves the city and its people. He also highlighted Vietnam’s success in reducing the percentage of poor households to around 3%. Vietnamese people are generally hard-working and have a strong sense of duty & hierarchy. More specifically, friendship is highly treasured. The country offers North Indian investors a lot of advantages and benefits, including new free trade (FTA) agreements and economic partners.

“Both Haryana & Punjab, being the breadbasket of India, offer immense potential for partnerships in food processing and food sustainability in vegetables, fruits & grains. Vietnam also being rich in agro-industry can benefit from the technology and resources and vice versa for North India. Looking at this we plan to appoint an Honorary Consul to Chandigarh for better Co-Operation” further continued Mr. Chau.

Acknowledging the growth of the state of Punjab, the Ambassador further added “We can also propose to start a direct flight from Chandigarh Airport to main cities of Vietnam, which will help the inflexible and frequent movement of potential investors & tourists from both Nations.”

It provides a comparatively advantageous outpost for having a representative in Chandigarh to promote bilateral interests in the Northern Region of India covering the States of Punjab and Haryana both.
